A Shopify VIP tier app for spend-based member rewards

Memberply’s Spend Tiered Discounts benefit rewards members as their eligible purchases reach configured thresholds. Each spend level can offer a percentage or fixed discount, or unlock another membership tier’s benefits. Members receive the highest spend level they have reached under your qualification rules.

This suits stores with repeat purchasing, such as replenishment products, specialist supplies or a VIP customer club. Set achievable thresholds and useful rewards using your own purchase patterns. For broader program design, see the tiered loyalty program guide.

Example: Bronze, Silver and Gold spending levels

With $760 eligible spend, the sample member has reached Silver and needs another $240 to reach Gold. These are illustrative thresholds and rewards, not defaults or customer results. The levels do not add together to create a 30% discount.

The spend threshold qualifies the member for a level. An optional minimum purchase amount is a separate rule for using that level’s discount on an order. Explain both, and check margins before choosing the percentages.

Which purchases count toward a spend tier?

For example, an eligible order amount of $200 paid with $50 native store credit contributes $150 toward a tier. The store-credit exclusion applies to newly recorded orders and newly imported historical orders; previously recorded spend is not automatically recalculated.

Member Details separates Lifetime store spend from Eligible spend. Use Eligible spend to explain qualification, rather than assuming Shopify’s lifetime total must match the amount used for your program.

Calendar-year or lifetime qualification?

Current calendar year: qualifying spend starts again each January in your Shopify store’s time zone. Memberply resets the current spend level while retaining prior-year history. Make the annual reset clear before customers join.

Lifetime spend: eligible purchases accumulate without an annual reset. This can suit a longer-term recognition program, but the total still follows your eligibility rules.

Enable Count spending before joining or approval to include eligible earlier orders within the selected period when a member is added or an applicant is approved. Shopify access to older orders can limit historical imports. Lifetime mode alone is not a promise that every old purchase has been imported.

Choose whether refunds can lower an earned level

Enable Allow refunds to reduce an earned level if refunds or cancellations should move a member down when eligible spend falls below a threshold. Leave it disabled to preserve the highest level reached within the selected qualification period.

Example: a member reaches a $500 threshold, then a $100 eligible refund reduces spend to $400. Your refund setting determines whether that earned level can fall. Keeping an earned level does not remove a calendar-year reset.

A refund reversing an original store-credit payment does not subtract that excluded credit twice. Refunding money originally paid still reduces eligible spend, even when the refund is issued as new store credit. Test full and partial refunds against your published terms.

When do discounts and benefits unlock?

Spend-based checkout discounts use the member’s recorded, synchronized qualifying spend. Do not promise that items still in the current cart will unlock a higher level for that same checkout. Verify the member’s level after the qualifying order is processed and synchronized.

For a spend level, choose either a discount or an Upgrade to membership tier benefit selection. The latter grants access to the selected tier’s benefits while billing continues on the member’s current membership tier. It is not an automatic subscription-price change.

Members see Your spend progress in both Shopify customer accounts and the legacy Memberply dashboard. The card shows eligible spend, the qualification period and the amount needed for the next level. Members reload their dashboard to see newly recorded orders or completed historical imports.

Configure spend tiers in Memberply

1. Open Benefits, choose the membership tier’s Edit Benefits, then enable and edit Spend Tiered Discounts.
2. Name the benefit and explain the offer. Set tax and shipping treatment, qualification period and spending-before-joining rules.
3. Choose whether refunds can reduce earned levels.
4. Add each tier’s name, threshold and discount or benefit-tier upgrade. Set any minimum purchase amount, then save.

Test with a controlled member account before launch. Review the spend-tier setup guide and compare ordinary member discounts if every member should receive the same offer without spend qualification.

App pricing and the cost of VIP rewards

Memberply Growth costs US$49/month, with unlimited members, a 14-day app trial and no Memberply transaction fee. Check the Shopify App Store listing. Your customer membership prices, Shopify charges, payment processing and reward costs are separate.

A 10% discount on $100 of eligible merchandise reduces that purchase price by $10 before any additional charges. Budget that saving alongside goods, fulfilment and other benefits. Reaching a higher tier does not by itself prove that a customer’s extra purchases cover the reward cost.
