Cross-sell planning example: a camera buyer receives a compatible case recommendation only if they have not already bought it

What is a cross-sell email?

A cross-sell email recommends an additional product that complements something a customer bought or is considering. A camera case for a camera buyer is a cross-sell. Recommending a more expensive camera is an upsell; reminding someone to reorder the same consumable is replenishment.

The useful question is: what can this customer do with the additional item that their original purchase does not cover? Explain that connection before offering an incentive. For the wider customer journey, see the post-purchase email guide.

Build a purchased-A-but-not-B audience

Start with a qualifying purchase of item A and exclude customers who have already bought item B. Check product variants, bundles, stock, refunds and marketing eligibility. Review a sample of matching customers before turning on the sequence.

Klaviyo documents product-based trigger filters and profile filters that recheck eligibility before later messages. Use the official trigger and filter guide to put each condition in the appropriate place. A check only at entry will not catch every later purchase.

StagePurposeSend only if
First recommendationExplain one useful pairing and link to its details. The original order experience is satisfactory and the complement is relevant and available.
Optional follow-upAnswer a distinct question about fit, use or what is included. The customer has not bought the complement and the follow-up adds information.
ExitStop that product recommendation. The item was bought, eligibility changed, or the planned sequence ended.

Set a delay that fits product use and delivery, rather than a universal day count. Limit re-entry and coordinate with other promotions. Do not extend a supposedly final deadline automatically or promise combined shipping unless fulfillment can actually support it.

Use the segmentation guide for audience planning; keep broader education, feedback and replenishment in the post-purchase flow.

Add member benefits only when they apply

A member discount or available benefit can support a relevant recommendation, but the product should make sense on its own. Confirm product exclusions, current tier eligibility and any stacking rules before describing a saving.

Memberply’s Klaviyo integration supplies documented membership profile properties such as active status and tier. It does not automatically build a product recommendation engine or these cross-sell flows. Use your ecommerce integration for purchase events and configure recommendations in your email platform.

The documented membership profile sync does not list credit balances or redemption history. Do not insert a credit amount without a separately verified source. You can direct eligible members to Shopify new customer accounts to check current benefits. Learn more about member discounts and store credit program design.

Measure additional purchases and contribution

Track complementary-product purchasers per eligible customer over a fixed window. If possible, compare a randomized group receiving the promotion with a holdout receiving no cross-sell promotion. Define how returns and cancellations affect the result.

For an illustrative test, 25 of 500 assigned customers buy the complement versus 15 of 500 in a holdout: 5% versus 3%. The 2-percentage-point difference corresponds to an estimated 10 additional purchasing customers in the promoted group. This is a worked example, not a benchmark or proof of reliable lift.

At 18 in contribution per incremental purchasing customer before campaign-specific costs, those 10 customers contribute 180. If extra campaign costs are 200, the result is negative 20. Include discounts, product cost, fulfillment and rewards consistently, without counting the same cost twice.

A separate later order does not increase the original order’s average order value. Measure repeat revenue and customer contribution as well as average order value. Do not present all email-attributed revenue as sales caused by the campaign.

Cross-sell email questions

What is a cross-sell email?

A cross-sell email recommends an additional product that complements a purchase or product of interest. The message should explain why the pairing is useful and link to the relevant item or guidance.

How is cross-selling different from upselling?

Cross-selling adds a complementary product, such as a case for a camera. Upselling recommends a higher-value version of the main purchase. Reordering the same consumable is replenishment.

When should I send a cross-sell email?

Choose timing around delivery, product use and the reason for the recommendation. Check the original order experience and avoid a fixed delay for every product category.

Who should be excluded from a cross-sell flow?

Exclude customers who already bought the recommended item, cannot use the pairing or are not eligible for the marketing message. Recheck inventory, bundles, returns, unresolved service issues and member eligibility where relevant.

Do cross-sell emails need discounts?

No. Compatibility, convenience and useful product guidance can explain the offer. If you use a discount, verify the margin, eligibility and actual expiry terms.

Does a cross-sell email increase average order value?

It can if an extra item becomes part of the same order. A separate later purchase does not change the original order value. Measure complementary purchases, repeat revenue and contribution using clearly defined windows.
