The app fee is one part of the program cost
A Shopify loyalty program costs the app subscription plus the rewards customers use, any shipping subsidies, setup work, communications and ongoing operations. Custom development adds a separately scoped project cost when you need it.
Memberply Growth costs US$49/month, includes all standard features and unlimited members, and offers a 14-day free trial. Memberply does not charge a percentage of your membership revenue. Shopify and payment-provider charges are separate. See Memberply pricing and the billing guide.
Growth gives you the standard features to launch and grow your membership program. Enterprise is for specific custom integrations, development and implementation. It is not a required upgrade when your member count grows.
This guide estimates the merchant’s operating budget. If you are deciding what customers should pay to join, use the membership pricing strategy guide.
What should a loyalty program budget include?
| Cost | How to estimate it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Software | App subscription plus any additional tools the program needs. | Member, order or usage limits; separate email, SMS or automation charges. |
| Rewards and discounts | Expected eligible activity multiplied by the benefit actually used. | Redemption, exclusions, overlapping promotions and existing discounts. |
| Shipping benefits | Qualifying orders multiplied by the additional shipping subsidy. | Orders already receiving public free shipping should not be counted again. |
| Setup and launch | Staff time for configuration, copy, testing and training, plus any external quote. | Which tasks can be completed using standard features? |
| Ongoing operations | Time spent on member support, reporting and program maintenance. | Whether existing staff capacity covers the work or creates additional cost. |
| Custom implementation | A quote based on the systems, data and workflows involved. | Initial development, migration, testing and ongoing support as separate items. |
Include only additional costs when measuring the effect of the program, but include shared costs when planning the store’s total cash budget. Label which view you are using. A Shopify plan you already pay for is different from a new tool purchased specifically for the program.
A worked monthly loyalty program cost calculation
The following is a fictional planning example for 200 members. All amounts are in US dollars. Only the $49 Memberply app price is an actual advertised price; all other figures are assumptions, not typical costs, customer results or an Enterprise quote.
Assume the store issues $1,000 of promotional credit each month. In a steady-state planning scenario, it expects $400 of credit to be redeemed per month across issued balances. For this simplified budget, redeemed credit is counted at face value as a reduction in sales receipts.
| Item | Assumption | Monthly amount |
|---|---|---|
| Memberply Growth | All standard features and unlimited members. | $49 |
| Promotional credit redeemed | $1,000 issued per month × assumed 40% eventual redemption in steady state. | $400 |
| Additional shipping subsidy | 30 qualifying orders × $6 additional subsidy. | $180 |
| Program administration | 5 staff hours × an assumed $30 internal hourly cost. | $150 |
| Additional messaging | Assumed extra email or SMS tool usage. | $40 |
| Total modeled recurring cost | 49 + 400 + 180 + 150 + 40. | $819 |
At 200 members, that is about $4.10 per member per month in modeled costs. It does not mean each member costs the same amount; frequent buyers may use more benefits.
If initial configuration and testing take 20 staff hours at the same assumed $30 internal hourly cost, setup adds $600. The first-month planning total becomes $1,419 if that month also incurs the modeled recurring costs. Actual credit redemption timing may differ during launch.
This example excludes custom development, membership payment processing, taxes and any other program-specific costs not listed. Add applicable items from your own quotes and records. Keep internal staff time separate from new cash spending when reporting the budget.
Test lower and higher benefit usage
| Monthly cost | Lower usage | Base case | Higher usage |
|---|---|---|---|
| App | $49 | $49 | $49 |
| Credit redeemed | $200 | $400 | $600 |
| Shipping subsidies | $90 | $180 | $270 |
| Staff time | $100 | $150 | $200 |
| Additional messaging | $20 | $40 | $60 |
| Total | $459 | $819 | $1,179 |
The totals show why the app fee alone cannot describe the program’s cost. Keep each scenario internally consistent with its expected orders, benefit usage and support workload.
Match benefits to purchase frequency. A monthly credit offer for customers who normally shop twice a year may have a different redemption pattern from a replenishment program. Separate new members from established repeat customers when reviewing usage.
Do not assume unused rewards make an otherwise unaffordable offer work. Track credit issued, redeemed and still available separately, and plan for heavier redemption periods. For product rewards, include product and fulfilment costs; for discounts, measure the reduction in net sales without subtracting it a second time.
Estimate the additional sales needed to cover costs
For a program without membership fees, a simplified break-even calculation is:
Here, the 40% margin is after ordinary product, fulfilment and payment costs but before the program costs listed above. The additional sales figure is measured before those separately budgeted loyalty credits and subsidies. If your sales or margin figures already include the reward impact, adjust the model so you do not count it twice.
For paid memberships, net membership-fee contribution can reduce the amount that must come from extra product sales. Deduct payment costs and avoid counting any benefit costs twice. Membership revenue is not all profit, particularly when a fee funds store credit.
Measure additional sales against a realistic baseline. Customers who join may already be your most loyal buyers. Higher spending by members alone does not show that the program caused the increase. Use the loyalty program ROI calculator to explore assumptions, then compare with actual results.
When does custom development add to the budget?
Use Growth when the standard benefits, member experience and integrations cover your program. Needing more members does not by itself create a custom-development requirement.
Enterprise work may be useful for a connection to an internal business system, a specialized member experience or migration support. The price depends on the agreed scope. We do not publish a fixed project rate or a generic implementation range because different requirements involve different work.
Request separate estimates for discovery and data preparation, development, testing, launch support and ongoing maintenance. Identify the systems involved, required fields, ownership and acceptance criteria. The loyalty integrations guide helps turn the idea into a concrete brief.
For example, syncing supported membership properties to an existing email integration is different from building a two-way connection to an internal CRM. Assess the actual gap before budgeting custom work. Discuss an Enterprise project when you have requirements beyond standard configuration.
Before you approve the budget
- Define one useful offer. Choose benefits that fit customer habits and can be explained clearly.
- Use actual costs. Replace illustrative amounts with shipping rates, staff time, margins and provider charges from your business.
- Check reward conditions. Set eligibility and review how promotions, cancellations and returns affect the offer.
- Confirm platform requirements. Shopify store credit has account, currency and subscription restrictions. Review Shopify’s current store-credit rules and fees before budgeting a credit-led program.
- Separate setup from operations. Keep one-time work, recurring app fees and usage-dependent costs visible.
- Pilot and measure. Agree a budget and review period, then compare issued rewards, redemption, support time and contribution.

Loyalty program cost FAQs
How much does a Shopify loyalty program cost?
The total includes software, redeemed rewards, shipping benefits, setup and ongoing operations. Memberply Growth is US$49/month; the rest depends on your offer and usage. Custom Enterprise work is scoped separately.
Does Growth include the features needed to grow a membership program?
Yes. Growth includes all standard Memberply features and unlimited members. Enterprise is for custom development, integrations and implementation requirements.
Is the membership fee customers pay included in the app price?
No. The Memberply subscription is a cost to your store. You set the membership fees your customers pay separately.
Does Memberply charge transaction fees?
Memberply does not charge a percentage of your membership revenue. Shopify and your payment provider may have separate charges.
Should I budget store credit at issuance or redemption?
Track both, along with credit still available. For operating scenarios, model expected redemption and its timing. The worked example uses redeemed promotional credit at face value; it is not an accounting treatment for outstanding balances.
How much does custom loyalty development cost?
There is no fixed Memberply Enterprise project price. Development and ongoing support are quoted for the agreed systems, workflows and implementation scope.
How can I reduce loyalty program costs?
Start with a focused offer, use standard features where they fit, avoid overlapping benefits and review actual redemption and support workload before expanding.
