Sample inputs

Monthly revenue

$45,000

Baseline repeat customer revenue.

Repeat lift

15%

Illustrative assumption, not a forecast.

Loyalty ROI

Incremental contribution minus costs

Use the estimate to decide which benefits can fund themselves.

Loyalty inputs

Use monthly figures for the same customer group. Amounts are in USD. Defaults are fictional examples. Contribution margin should deduct product, payment and variable fulfilment costs, before the program costs entered here.

Reward rate applies to all projected revenue for this group, including purchases that would happen without the program.

Include app fees, support, marketing and allocated setup costs not already in your margin or reward rate.

Turn your estimate into an enterprise budget review

Planning a Shopify Plus rollout or a program with custom requirements? Use this estimate as one input to your decision. Record the customer group, contribution margin, effective reward cost, operating costs and integration assumptions behind it.

Use the free business-case workbook to compare a pilot, a wider rollout and a no-growth scenario. Keep net membership-fee income separate from this calculator’s product-sales model, and include each benefit cost once.

For custom implementation, bring your assumptions and system requirements to an Enterprise discussion. We can review the fit and scope before you commit to a rollout.

How to calculate loyalty program ROI

  1. Baseline monthly revenue = customers × orders per customer × average order value.
  2. Incremental revenue = baseline revenue × assumed order frequency change.
  3. Incremental contribution = incremental revenue × contribution margin before rewards.
  4. Rewards = (baseline revenue + incremental revenue) × reward cost rate.
  5. Total program cost = rewards + monthly operating costs.
  6. Net gain = incremental contribution − total program cost.
  7. ROI = net gain ÷ total program cost × 100.

This model holds customer count and order value constant and changes order frequency. A 15% assumption changes 1.2 orders per customer to 1.38 orders, not a 15-percentage-point change in a retention rate. You can enter a negative change to model a decline.

Worked example using the default inputs

500 customers × 1.2 orders × $75 creates $45,000 baseline monthly revenue. A 15% frequency increase adds $6,750 in revenue. At a 55% contribution margin, that creates $3,712.50 before program costs. Rewards at 5% of $51,750 cost $2,587.50. Adding $100 operating costs gives $2,687.50 total program cost, leaving $1,025 net gain and approximately 38.1% ROI.

The illustrative 12-month run rate is $12,300. It is not a profit forecast. With no frequency increase and the same other inputs, the model instead loses $2,350 per month because rewards still apply to baseline purchases and operating costs remain.

What lift would cover these costs?

For positive baseline revenue and a contribution margin greater than the reward rate, break-even lift = (baseline revenue × reward rate + operating costs) ÷ (baseline revenue × (contribution margin − reward rate)). The default example needs about 10.44% order frequency growth to break even. If margin is at or below the reward rate, more orders cannot offset positive program costs under these assumptions.

Choose assumptions you can defend

  • Use a comparable customer group and period. Members may already shop more before joining, so comparing members with all non-members does not prove incremental sales.
  • Where practical, compare a test group with a similar group that did not receive the offer, and account for seasonality and other promotions.
  • Model lower, expected, and higher usage. A positive scenario is only as reliable as its order-frequency and cost assumptions.
  • Do not count discounts or shipping costs twice. If included in your margin, exclude them from the reward rate, or adjust the margin to a consistent pre-reward basis.
  • For credit and points, distinguish issuance from redemption and outstanding rewards. Use an effective cost assumption rather than automatically treating the advertised earning rate as the cost.

This calculator excludes membership-fee revenue and taxes. For a paid offer, use the membership pricing guide alongside this scenario, and reconcile revenue and costs once. See the store credit guide for reward calculations and the paid loyalty guide for program examples.

Loyalty strategy

How to use the loyalty program ROI calculator

Start with your current repeat customer revenue, then model a defensible order-frequency change and subtract rewards and operating costs. If you are still choosing the right retention mechanics, read the customer retention examples guide.

Active repeat customers

The customer group you expect the loyalty program to influence each month.

Average order value

Use current AOV for repeat customers or members, not a blended storewide guess if those cohorts behave differently.

Repeat purchase lift

The expected increase in order frequency from loyalty benefits such as cashback, store credit, discounts or points.

Reward cost

The effective cost of rewards as a share of revenue. This can include store credit, cashback, discounts, free shipping or points.

Compare models using consistent assumptions

Use the same audience, time period and contribution margin for each scenario. Include rewards on existing purchases in program costs. Run a zero-incremental-sales scenario to see the cost if purchasing does not change, then a plausible improvement scenario to test in a pilot.

This calculator models incremental product contribution against reward and operating costs. It has no separate membership-fee input. For a paid program, model net fee income separately instead of entering fees as product sales. Start with the loyalty model comparison and program cost guide to choose your assumptions.

Loyalty program ROI calculator FAQ

What is loyalty program ROI?

In this calculator, ROI is incremental contribution minus rewards and operating costs, divided by those program costs. It estimates a scenario rather than proving the program caused more sales.

How do I calculate loyalty program ROI?

Calculate incremental revenue from an assumed order-frequency change, multiply by contribution margin before rewards, and subtract rewards plus operating costs. Divide the net gain by total program cost.

Why are rewards charged on baseline purchases too?

This model assumes the customer group earns rewards on all projected purchases, including orders that would occur without the program. Charging rewards only on extra sales would understate that cost.

What happens when program costs are zero?

Percentage ROI is undefined because the denominator is zero. The calculator shows N/A and still displays the estimated net gain.

Does the annual figure predict next year’s profit?

No. It multiplies the monthly net gain by twelve while holding every input constant. It does not model churn, growth, seasonality, taxes, or membership-fee revenue.

Can Memberply help run a loyalty program?

Memberply supports membership benefits such as store credit, cashback, discounts, points, free shipping, and exclusive access. Results depend on your offer, costs, and customer behaviour; the app does not guarantee positive ROI.

Need an order-value baseline? Use the average order value calculator to calculate sales per order and compare a target revenue scenario.
