Store credit vs gift cards on Shopify: which should you use?

Choose the right way to give customers value. Compare account-based rewards with gift-card codes, then check the costs and checkout experience before launch.

Store credit vs gift cards: the practical difference

Store credit is value attached to a customer account. A gift card is value redeemed through a code that can be delivered to a gift recipient. For a Shopify merchant, the decision starts with the job: reward a known customer or offer a gift someone can buy for another person.

Both can fund a later order, but they are different experiences. The comparison below covers Shopify native store credit and Shopify gift cards. A third-party app may use a discount code and call it credit; confirm the actual redemption method before choosing a setup.

Which one fits your use case?

  1. A gift a shopper buys for someone else

Start with a gift card. The offer is a purchased amount of value for the recipient to spend. Make the gifting journey easy to find instead of making the recipient join a loyalty program.

  2. A reward for an existing member

Consider account-based credit. For example, an illustrative 5% reward on a $100 eligible purchase creates $5 toward a future order. Explain earning rules and when the value becomes available.

  3. A return or goodwill adjustment

Use your approved refund and support policy. A credit balance and a refund to the original payment method are different outcomes; make the chosen option clear to the customer. The comparison is not a reason to replace a refund the customer is entitled to.

  4. An immediate sale promotion

A discount may fit better than either option. If the promise is 10% off this order, use a purchase-price reduction rather than asking customers to interpret value for a later order.

  5. A membership that converts fees into credit

Model the membership payment and credit value together. Paying $20 to receive $20 credit shifts the timing of spending; it does not create $20 of free savings. Use the fee-to-store-credit explanation to plan the offer.

Illustrative examples, all amounts in USD
ScenarioCustomer experienceWhat the merchant should explain
A $50 purchased gift cardA buyer pays $50; the recipient applies $50 to a later $65 order and pays $15 more, before any other costs. The gift was funded by the buyer. It is not a $50 merchant-funded discount.
A $5 earned credit rewardA member earns $5 on an eligible order, then applies it to a later $40 order and pays the remaining $35, before other costs. The reward cost belongs in the program budget. The return order is not automatically incremental.
A $20 fee converted into $20 creditThe member pays $20 for the period, then uses the credit on a $50 purchase and pays the remaining $30.The two payments total $50 before other costs. Disclose renewal, credit and cancellation terms.

These are arithmetic examples, not customer outcomes or preconfigured plans. Keep tax, shipping, other benefits and membership fees explicit when you adapt them.

A useful customer message identifies the source of value: “You earned $5 in reward credit” differs from “Your $50 gift card is ready.” Avoid calling every balance a discount. For program economics, use the loyalty business-case worksheet and the store credit calculator.

Check the checkout constraints before launch

Native credit requires supported customer accounts rather than legacy accounts. Shopify lists transaction-fee conditions, currency matching and sales-channel restrictions; check those against your store before launch. Subscription renewals require app support and customer opt-in, so do not promise automatic renewal funding from an ordinary reward balance. See Shopify’s current requirements.

Gift-card balances can be used over multiple orders, combined with discount codes and applied alongside another payment method when necessary. Gift cards can cover an initial subscription payment but not recurring subscription charges. Follow Shopify’s redemption guidance for the details.

Test a real customer journey for each promised channel: receiving the value, locating it, applying it and understanding the remaining balance. Include a customer whose order exceeds their balance. A successful online test does not establish that the POS experience is configured.

Where Memberply fits into a credit rewards program

Shopify provides the native balance and checkout payment method. Memberply adds membership benefit rules, including store-credit cashback, sign-up credit and recurring credit drops. Choose the reward because it fits the audience, then configure its amount, eligibility and validity.

With Shopify customer accounts, Memberply’s documented flow delivers earned credit into the customer account when the customer logs in. With legacy accounts, its documented cashback flow uses discount codes in the member portal. These are different redemption methods; neither should be described as a purchased Shopify gift card.

Follow the native credit setup guide and cashback instructions. For reward selection and budgeting, continue to the store credit program guide. This comparison does not establish Memberply support for paying subscription renewals with credit.

Questions to settle before choosing credit or a gift card
QuestionWhat to record
Is the value for the buyer, a known member or a gift recipient?Write the customer and use case before choosing the payment mechanism.
Was it purchased, earned, refunded or issued as goodwill?Name the funding source in the offer and budget.
How will the customer find and spend it?Record account sign-in, code delivery and channel steps.
What conditions need to be visible?Define earning rules, expiry, cancellation consequences and any separate membership charge.
Does it work with the actual store setup?Test currency, account type, checkout and POS if promised.
What does success mean?Measure redemption and subsequent contribution, with a credible comparison. Issued value alone is not a retention result.

For an existing-customer reward, start by designing a simple store credit program. For gifting, follow Shopify’s gift card setup. If you need recurring membership benefits, explore Memberply store credit and check that the chosen delivery flow matches your customer accounts.

Questions merchants ask

Is Shopify store credit the same as a gift card?

No. Native store credit is an account balance, while a gift card uses a redemption code. Choose based on the customer experience you need, rather than treating the two names as interchangeable.

Should I use store credit or gift cards for loyalty rewards?

Account-based credit can suit rewards for known customers. Gift cards can suit gifting. Compare the earning rules, delivery method, checkout experience and cost before choosing.

Is fee-funded store credit a free discount?

No. If a customer pays $20 and receives $20 in credit, the value was funded by that payment. Explain any additional benefits separately and include the membership fee when calculating savings.

Does Memberply cashback pay cash to a bank account?

No. Memberply cashback is a store-credit reward. Native customer-account credit and the legacy discount-code delivery flow have different redemption experiences.

Can I offer both store credit and gift cards?

Yes. A store can use credit rewards for existing customers and gift cards for gifting. Explain each balance separately and test the purchase and redemption journeys you advertise.
