What is a Shopify Plus loyalty program?

A Shopify Plus loyalty program rewards repeat customers through points, membership benefits, store credit or VIP access. Shopify Plus is the commerce platform; your loyalty app and program rules determine who qualifies, what they receive and how they redeem it.

Start with the customer habit you want to support. A frequent replenishment buyer may value recurring credit. An occasional collector may prefer early access. A high-spending customer may appreciate a meaningful tier benefit without another subscription.

This guide focuses on choosing and implementing a program for an established Shopify business. For a custom member experience or connection to an existing system, see Memberply Enterprise.

Choose between points, memberships and store credit

Match the model to customer behaviour
ModelBest starting questionWhat to plan
PointsWould earning towards a reward encourage another purchase?Earning rules, redemption value, exclusions and clear progress.
Paid membershipWill frequent buyers use enough benefits to justify a fee?Billing, recurring value, cancellations and benefit costs.
Spend-based VIP tiersShould customers qualify through eligible purchases?Qualification period, tier movement and treatment of returns.
Store credit rewardsWould a clear spending balance be easier to understand?Issuance, redemption, currency, expiry and reconciliation.

These choices can work together. A paid membership can include credit, while a free tier can reward eligible spending. Avoid launching several overlapping reward currencies before customers understand the core offer.

What does Shopify Plus change?

Shopify Plus adds advanced checkout customization options. Eligible apps can extend the information, shipping and payment steps on Plus, and Plus has access to the Checkout Branding API. The checkout and accounts editor itself is available on Basic and higher plans. See Shopify’s checkout customization comparison.

That does not mean every loyalty feature requires Plus, or that installing a loyalty app adds every possible checkout customization. Evaluate the app’s actual features separately from your Shopify plan. Memberply’s standard membership and benefit features are available through its Growth plan; custom implementation is scoped separately.

Write down where each interaction belongs: a storefront offer, the member account, a checkout step or a back-office integration. This avoids buying a checkout project when a clearer membership page would solve the customer’s problem.

Design the member account around Shopify’s supported components

Give members a clear place to find their tier, available benefits and the next action. Prioritize readable balances, understandable eligibility and a simple route to membership management before adding decorative sections.

Shopify customer-account UI extensions use Shopify-provided components and the merchant’s branding. They cannot render arbitrary HTML, override component CSS or access the page’s real DOM. A custom design must be adapted to those constraints, including on Plus. See Shopify’s customer-account component documentation.

A theme app block belongs to the storefront theme. It does not automatically appear inside new customer accounts. Review account designs against the supported account extension layout before approving development. For Memberply setup, follow the member benefits account guide.

Plan store credit separately from membership billing

Memberply supports benefits such as recurring loyalty drops and membership fee-to-credit. Define what triggers each grant, when it becomes available and what happens when membership ends.

For online redemption of Shopify store credit, customers must use new customer accounts or Shop Pay. Credit can pay towards an initial subscription purchase, but not recurring subscription bills. Only the balance matching the checkout currency is available. Shopify B2B credit belongs to company locations, which is different from a D2C customer balance. Check Shopify’s current store credit requirements against your intended journey.

Do not assume a D2C loyalty setup also implements company-level B2B rewards or shares balances between stores. Treat those as separate requirements to assess. Test refunds, expiry, currency and duplicate grant prevention before launch.

When do you need a custom integration?

Start with a concrete workflow: “When membership changes, our CRM needs the new tier” is a better brief than “connect all our systems.” Name the system that owns each field, the event that starts the update and the expected delay.

Memberply’s documented Klaviyo integration syncs membership status, tier information and relevant membership dates. It does not imply a complete credit-balance, reward-redemption or analytics feed. Check each required field before deciding that an existing integration covers the project.

  • Use standard setup when existing benefits and integrations cover the member journey.
  • Scope custom work for an external CRM, bespoke eligibility source, specialized account presentation or migration requirements that the standard setup does not cover.
  • Agree on operations including access, retries, duplicate events, error alerts, reconciliation and who maintains the connection.
  • Test merchant isolation so custom configuration and data are available only to the intended store and authorized members.

Importing member records is separate from transferring payment credentials or subscription contracts. Review the existing provider and migration path before promising uninterrupted billing. Discuss the integration and migration scope with Memberply before committing to a launch date.

Check the offer against purchase frequency and margin

Consider a fictional replenishment retailer offering a $120 annual membership with $5 of monthly credit and shipping savings on qualifying orders. A customer making six eligible orders and saving $6 shipping each time receives $36 in shipping savings. Even if all $60 of credit is used, that is $96 of face-value benefits against a $120 fee.

This example is not a recommended price or a customer result. It shows why a long benefit list may still be poor value. Test the offer against real purchase intervals and exclude savings customers already receive through public promotions.

For the merchant, budget redeemed rewards, shipping subsidies, product costs, support, app fees and custom maintenance. Compare contribution with a similar group of customers outside the program. Existing loyal customers may be more likely to join, so higher member spending alone does not prove the program caused it.

A practical Shopify Plus loyalty launch checklist

  1. Define the audience and promise

Choose one priority audience and a benefit they can use within their normal purchase cycle. Separate first-time buyers from established repeat customers.

  2. Confirm scope and ownership

List standard features, custom work, source systems, migration needs, support responsibilities and acceptance criteria. Confirm the Shopify account and checkout surfaces involved.

  3. Model the costs

Include lower and higher reward usage, implementation, ongoing support and existing discounts. Agree what success means before launch.

  4. Test the complete member journey

Use a development or staging store with test payments. Check joining, renewal, cancellation, benefits, credit, returns, mobile account access and failed integration events.

  5. Launch a focused pilot

Start with a manageable audience. Review activation, benefit usage, repeat orders, contribution and support issues before expanding.

Shopify Plus loyalty program FAQs

Do I need Shopify Plus to use Memberply?

No. Memberply’s standard membership and benefit features do not require Shopify Plus. Plus-specific checkout capabilities and custom integration requirements should be evaluated separately.

Can I build a custom member portal inside Shopify customer accounts?

You can plan a member experience using supported customer-account extensions. Layout and styling must follow Shopify’s component and branding constraints; a completely unrestricted web design cannot simply be copied into the account.

Can store credit pay for recurring membership bills?

Shopify store credit can be used towards an initial subscription purchase, but not recurring subscription bills. Treat membership billing and credit rewards as separate flows.

Should a Shopify Plus loyalty program use points or memberships?

Choose based on customer behaviour and benefit economics. Points can reward activity, paid memberships need enough ongoing value to justify a fee, and spend-based tiers recognize qualifying purchases. Store credit can complement these models.

Does every Shopify Plus merchant need an enterprise loyalty plan?

No. Start with standard features when they cover the requirements. Enterprise work is useful when custom integrations, a specialized member experience or migration support need a separate scope.

What should I prepare for an enterprise enquiry?

Share your store URL, intended audience, current loyalty or membership setup, systems to connect, design requirements and target launch date. Identify which requirements are essential for launch.
