What should a referral program email include?
A referral email invites an eligible customer to recommend your store and explains what happens if their friend qualifies. State who earns the reward, the action required, when the reward becomes available and where to find the referral link. A reward-status email serves a different purpose: it tells the member what has actually happened.
For an ecommerce membership program, begin with appreciation for the member and a relevant reason to share. Do not turn every customer interaction into a request for more referrals. Give each message one clear next step, such as opening the member account to copy a personal link.
The examples below are original website examples, not live campaigns or messages sent to customers. Bracketed fields are editing placeholders, not working personalization variables. Replace them with verified information and check the final message in your sending system.
Choose the referral goal before writing the offer
| Program choice | What qualifies | What the email must make clear |
|---|---|---|
| Membership signup | A friend purchases an eligible membership; the chosen qualification setting controls when the reward is issued | Say whether the reward follows activation or the first successful membership payment. Do not promise a paid-signup reward for a free-trial start. |
| Friend’s first store purchase | An attributed paid order that Shopify reports as the friend’s first-ever store order | The referring member earns the reward after a 14-day review period. A friend does not automatically receive a discount. |
| Reward points | A fixed whole number of points for the referring member | Use the actual point amount, and explain where members can view or use points. |
| Store credit | A fixed amount in the store currency for the referring member | State the currency and any configured expiry accurately. Confirm issuance before saying credit is available. |
Memberply referrals are available to active members of selected eligible tiers. Points rewards require Reward Points to be configured on those tiers. For native store-credit rewards, enable Shopify native store credit. Follow the Memberply referral setup documentation for configuration.
First-purchase referrals need the Referral tracking app embed. Attribution lasts 30 days, with the latest valid referral link taking precedence. Self-referrals and duplicate rewards are prevented. A first-purchase order cancelled, voided or refunded before reward issuance is disqualified; already issued rewards are not automatically removed after a later refund.
Keep the core qualification rule visible in the email, with full terms on the destination page. Do not use “give $10, get $10” unless a separately configured friend offer genuinely exists and works with your program.
6 referral email examples for ecommerce stores
Illustrative amounts: the $10 credit and 500 points below are examples, not default Memberply rewards. Use your actual store currency, eligibility, qualification setting and expiry. The account button should open your store’s member experience; members can then copy their own referral link.
1. Invite a member to refer a first-time shopper
Audience and timing: Eligible active members who can receive the invitation, after they have had a useful membership experience.
Subject: A thank-you for introducing a friend
Preview: Earn $10 in store credit when a first-time shopper qualifies.
Hi [First name],
Thanks for being part of [Store]. If someone you know would enjoy our products, you can share your personal referral link with them.
When your friend uses your link to make their first-ever purchase from us, you can earn $10 in store credit after the order passes our 14-day review. Cancelled, voided or refunded orders do not qualify before the reward is issued.
Open your member account to copy your link and read the referral terms. Your friend does not receive an automatic discount through this offer.
Thanks for sharing [Store] with someone who might enjoy it.
Button: Get my referral link
Before using this example: Use only for the first-store-purchase goal and the configured credit amount. Include the currency and applicable credit expiry in the final terms. Do not send to members whose referral access is unavailable.
2. Invite a friend to join the membership
Audience and timing: Eligible referring members when the program rewards the friend’s first successful membership payment.
Subject: Know someone who would enjoy [Membership]?
Preview: Share your link and earn 500 points after a qualifying paid signup.
Hi [First name],
Enjoying [specific membership benefit]? If someone you know would find it useful too, your personal link makes it easy to introduce them to [Membership].
You can earn 500 points when they join an eligible membership through your link and complete their first successful membership payment. A free-trial start alone does not earn the reward.
Your member account has your link and the full referral terms.
Button: View my referral link
Before using this example: This example uses the first-successful-payment setting. If your configured rule rewards activation instead, change the condition to match. Describe a real membership benefit, with its relevant limits, and never imply the friend receives free membership.
3. Send a gentle invitation reminder
Audience and timing: A limited follow-up to eligible members, only where current participation and contact rules can be checked.
Subject: Your referral link is here when you need it
Preview: A simple way to share [Store] with a friend.
Hi [First name],
If a friend has been asking about [Store], you can find your personal referral link in your member account.
The account page explains [verified reward] and [qualifying action and timing]. Share it when there is someone you think would enjoy shopping with us.
Thanks for being part of [Membership].
Button: Open my member account
Before using this example: Replace both bracketed conditions with a complete, accurate sentence. Avoid claiming the member has not shared unless you can verify it. Stop reminders after the intended action when that data is available, and apply a frequency limit. Do not invent an offer deadline.
4. Explain a first-purchase referral under review
Audience and timing: The referring member, only after a verified first-purchase referral record exists and remains pending.
Subject: Your referral is being reviewed
Preview: Your reward is not available yet.
Hi [First name],
Thanks for introducing someone to [Store]. We have recorded a first-purchase referral through your link.
The order is in its 14-day review period. If it remains eligible, your $10 store-credit reward will be issued after the review. Orders cancelled, voided or refunded before issuance do not qualify.
There is nothing you need to do while the review is underway. You can find the program terms in your member account.
Button: View referral terms
Before using this example: This is an optional message concept, not a built-in Memberply pending-email promise. A reliable status connection is required. Do not start a guessed timer from an email click or expose the friend’s order details.
5. Confirm an issued store-credit reward
Audience and timing: The referring member after credit issuance has been confirmed.
Subject: Your $10 referral credit is available
Preview: Thank you for introducing someone to [Store].
Hi [First name],
Your qualifying referral has earned you $10 in store credit. The credit has been added to your account.
Sign in to your customer account to view your balance and use available credit at checkout. [Verified expiry statement, or remove this sentence if it does not apply.]
Thanks for helping someone new discover [Store].
Button: View my store credit
Before using this example: Send only after confirmed issuance, using the actual currency, amount and expiry. Memberply already sends a store-credit notification when a referral credit reward is issued and an email address is available. Check that notification before adding a second message for the same reward.
6. Confirm an issued points reward
Audience and timing: The referring member after the points have actually been added.
Subject: You have earned 500 referral points
Preview: Your points are ready to view in your member account.
Hi [First name],
Thank you for introducing someone to [Store]. Your qualifying referral has earned you 500 points, and they have been added to your points balance.
Open your member account to see your balance and the rewards available through your membership.
Button: View my points
Before using this example: Use your actual points amount and redemption rules. Do not describe points as a cash balance or invent their currency value. This is an optional email example, not a claim that a dedicated referral-points email or event is automatically available in your email platform.
Referral email subject lines by message stage
| Stage | Subject line ideas | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Invitation | A thank-you for introducing a friend; Know someone who would enjoy [Store]? | “Your reward is ready” before any qualifying referral. |
| Reminder | Your referral link is here when you need it; A way to share [Membership] | False countdowns or implying the member failed to act. |
| Pending review | Your referral is being reviewed; We have recorded your referral | “You earned credit” while the reward is still pending. |
| Confirmed issuance | Your [amount] referral credit is available; You have earned [points] referral points | Claiming a balance or expiry that has not been verified. |
Let the preview text add the main condition or next step. Keep amounts out of reusable subject lines unless the sending system can reliably insert the current value. Test subjects against downstream qualifying referrals, not open rates alone.
Plan timing, data and stop rules
| Message | Required evidence | Stop or suppress when |
|---|---|---|
| Invitation | Current tier eligibility, enabled referral program and permission to send the message | The member lacks referral access, the program is disabled or the address is suppressed. |
| Reminder | Current eligibility and a defined frequency cap; participation data if used in the rule | The intended action has occurred, eligibility changed or the limit has been reached. |
| Pending status | A verified pending first-purchase referral record | The reward has been issued, the referral is disqualified or the record is uncertain. |
| Reward confirmation | Confirmed issuance, accurate amount and correct recipient | The same reward was already notified or issuance cannot be confirmed. |
Use the member account as the destination when your email platform does not have a verified personal referral URL. Do not paste one member’s link into a bulk message. Test sign-in and the destination on mobile with an eligible member and an ineligible account.
An integration with an email platform does not automatically provide every referral event or field. Klaviyo’s event-data guidance explains that event data belongs to the triggering event. Verify the actual payload before using a reward value, referral status or link in a flow. The examples here do not establish that Memberply exports those fields.
Keep promotional invitations separate from reward-status notifications in your plan. Check contact eligibility in the sending system and do not add a friend to a marketing list merely because a member shares a referral link. For broader messaging, use the VIP email sequence guide and membership onboarding strategy.
Measure qualified referrals and reward costs
Track the steps separately: eligible recipients, clicks to the member account, attributed referrals, referrals that pass qualification and rewards actually issued. An account click is not a shared link, and a shared link is not a qualified new customer.
Fictional example: 500 delivered invitation emails lead to 40 account-link clicks and 12 attributed first-purchase referrals. Two referrals are disqualified during review, leaving 10 qualified referrals. That is 40 ÷ 500 = 8% account-click rate, 10 ÷ 12 = 83.3% qualification rate, and 10 ÷ 500 = 2% qualified referrals per delivered invitation, provided the referrals are reliably linked to that invitation group.
If each qualified referral receives $10 credit, the issued credit face value is $100. That is not the same as cash spent or net profit. Track redemption, reward accounting, order contribution, returns and operational costs consistently. Do not treat attributed orders as proof that the email created incremental demand.
Allow the review period and processing to finish before comparing groups. Where practical, use a comparable randomized holdout to estimate the additional effect of the invitation. Record the audience, sending window and definitions in your ecommerce KPI worksheet.
Before sending your referral email
- Confirm the reward recipient, conversion goal, amount, currency and qualification timing.
- Check that the member can access the referral benefit and the friend journey matches the offer.
- Replace every bracketed field and add accurate terms, including expiry where applicable.
- Verify status and issuance before using “earned,” “added” or “available.”
- Preview on mobile, test the account link and check any personalization fallback.
- Check existing notifications, contact rules and suppression conditions to avoid duplicate messages.
Memberply handles eligible referral links, attribution and reward processing. The member referrals feature page explains the capability. These copy examples do not create or activate a sending workflow.
Referral email questions
How do I write a referral program email?
Start with appreciation, explain who earns the reward and the qualifying action, state the relevant timing, and give one clear next step. Link to the actual program terms and use only verified amounts and conditions.
What is a good referral email subject line?
Use a subject that matches the message stage, such as “A thank-you for introducing a friend” for an invitation or “Your referral credit is available” after confirmed issuance. Do not announce a reward while it is pending.
Does the referred friend automatically receive a discount?
No. Memberply’s first-store-purchase referral goal rewards the referring member, not the friend. Only advertise a friend offer if it has been separately configured and verified.
When does a Memberply first-purchase referral reward become available?
First-purchase referrals have a 14-day review period before issuance. An order cancelled, voided or refunded before issuance is disqualified. Confirm the reward has been issued before telling the member it is available.
Can a free-trial membership signup earn a referral reward?
It depends on the configured qualification setting. A program can reward when the referred friend becomes active or wait for their first successful membership payment. A trial start alone does not satisfy the payment-based setting.
Should I remind members who have not referred anyone?
Only if eligibility, participation data and sending rules support that audience. Use a limited follow-up and avoid claiming that someone has not shared when you cannot verify it.
Can I use these examples in Klaviyo or another email platform?
Yes, as copy starting points, but the required data and triggers must actually exist in your setup. Bracketed fields are not working template variables. Verify current eligibility, status, links and suppression rules before sending.
Does Memberply automatically send every email in this guide?
No. Memberply sends a store-credit notification after a referral credit reward is issued when an email address is available. Invitations, reminders and the optional status and points examples here require a separately verified sending workflow.
