Ask useful questions at the right moment, understand what the answers can tell you, and turn customer feedback into practical improvements.

What is a post-purchase survey?

A post-purchase survey asks customers about their experience after placing an order. It can reveal why they chose a product, what was unclear during shopping, or what needs improving after delivery. Match each question to a decision you can act on and an experience the customer has actually had.

Start with one objective: improve a product page, understand checkout friction, or learn about product use. A buyer on the Thank you page can describe the purchase experience, but cannot yet judge delivery or a product they have not received.

18 post-purchase survey questions to adapt

This is a question bank, not a single questionnaire. Select a few relevant questions, make answers optional where practical and test the wording with someone unfamiliar with your store. Replace bracketed product or benefit names with a specific item.

14. What would you need to know before ordering from us again?Short textMissing information for a relevant follow-up.
15. If you expect to buy [product] again, when might that be?Category-appropriate time ranges / Not planning to / Do not knowReplenishment timing hypotheses, not automatic send permission.
16. Which of these proposed benefits would be most useful to you?A short list of actual proposals / None / Not sureWhich membership idea merits further research.

18. What, if anything, made [specific benefit] difficult to use?Short text; show only when relevantA membership experience to review.

Ask about only one product or benefit at a time. For membership proposals, state any relevant fee or conditions before asking about interest. A preferred benefit does not establish willingness to pay.

Three short survey examples

Illustrative starting points: adapt these sequences to your store. You do not need to ask all 18 questions.

Choose a sequence for one research goal
GoalQuestion sequenceNext action
Improve a product pageQuestion 1, then question 2 with an optional explanationGroup missing information by product, then check the page against those themes.
Improve first-use instructionsQuestion 7, then 10; show question 11 only to customers who received and used the itemRevise one unclear instruction and monitor related support contacts.
Understand a membership benefitAsk eligible members question 17, then question 18 where relevantCompare feedback with actual benefit usage before changing the offer.

Keep an obvious support link available. Explain whether survey replies are monitored and how to get help with an order. A survey is not a substitute for responding to a delivery problem.

When should you ask?

Match timing to the customer experience
MomentSuitable subjectAvoid
Thank you page after orderingProduct choice and shopping experienceDelivery quality or product satisfaction.
After confirmed deliveryArrival condition and expectation of delivery timingAssuming every item in a split shipment has arrived.
After a realistic chance to use the productInstructions, fit for purpose and product feedbackA universal delay that ignores the category.
After meaningful membership experienceAwareness and use of an available benefitAsking a new member to evaluate a benefit they could not yet use.

Choose timing from delivery and usage context rather than a fixed number of days for every order. Avoid repeating a survey when a customer revisits an order page. Coordinate with post-purchase emails so requests do not crowd out essential order updates.

Write neutral questions and usable answer options

Pew Research Center explains that wording, answer choices and question order can influence responses. Its survey question guidance supports clear wording and asking about one concept at a time.

Improve the wording before launch
AvoidUse insteadWhy
How much did you love our quick delivery? How closely did the delivery timing match what you expected when ordering?Does not assume a positive experience.
Was checkout easy and affordable? How easy or difficult was it to complete your order?Separates effort from price.
Which VIP perk convinced you to buy?Which detail about the offer mattered most to you, if any?Does not assume the membership caused the purchase.

Include a neutral midpoint when it fits the question, and a separate Not applicable or Not sure option when needed. Keep ordered scales in a logical order. For a channel list, include Other and Do not remember; do not force every buyer into a paid channel.

Request only information needed for your stated purpose. Do not ask customers to place payment details or sensitive personal information in open text. Explain how feedback will be used and handle follow-up permissions separately.

How to use a post-purchase survey on Shopify

Shopify documents surveys on Thank you and Order status pages using app extensions. Choose an implementation that supports your current checkout configuration, and confirm placement and data storage with its provider.

  1. Choose one decision. Define what you will change if a recurring issue appears.
  2. Select the right moment. Use purchase questions after ordering and product-use questions later.
  3. Check routing. Test first and repeat orders, split delivery, unanswered questions and customers who have not used the product.
  4. Test on mobile. Ensure answer controls, text fields, submission feedback and the support link work without blocking order information.
  5. Check recording. Verify how duplicates, partial responses and completed submissions appear in reports.
  6. Assign an owner. Decide who reviews themes and who handles urgent support issues.

If feedback suggests a membership opportunity, use the customer segmentation guide to choose a relevant audience.

Turn survey responses into decisions

Fictional example: 200 unique eligible buyers are invited and 40 submit a completed survey. The completion rate for that invitation group is 40 ÷ 200 = 20%. If 12 of the 40 respondents report unclear sizing, that is 30% of respondents, not 30% of all buyers.

If only 30 respondents answered the sizing question, report 12 of 30, or 40%, for that question. Keep the denominator visible. A website survey view, an invitation sent and a delivered email are different denominators; do not compare them as if they measure the same thing.

Group open responses into themes, keep a few anonymized examples and separate first-time from repeat buyers where the sample supports it. Self-selected respondents may differ from people who did not answer. Small groups are useful for finding issues to investigate, not precise claims about every customer.

Channel recall is another clue alongside analytics, not proof that a channel caused the sale. Likewise, stated repurchase intent is not an actual repeat order. Use the ecommerce KPI worksheet to record question wording, invitation window, eligible audience and outcome definitions.

Choose one improvement, such as clearer sizing information, and compare relevant outcomes over a suitable period. Where practical, test it against a comparable control. A before-and-after change alone cannot isolate the effect from seasonality, promotions or a different customer mix.

Post-purchase survey questions answered

What should a post-purchase survey ask?

Ask about one decision you can act on, such as missing product information, checkout effort or first-use instructions. Choose questions that match what the customer has experienced.

How many questions should I include?

Use the fewest questions needed for the decision. The short examples in this guide use two or three steps, with conditional follow-ups. Test completion and usefulness rather than treating one length as a universal rule.

When should I send a post-purchase survey?

Ask purchase-experience questions after ordering. Wait until delivery and a realistic opportunity to use the product before asking about product experience. Timing depends on the category and order status.

Can I add a survey to a Shopify Thank you page?

Shopify supports survey experiences on Thank you and Order status pages through app extensions. Confirm that your chosen implementation supports your current checkout configuration and reporting needs.

Should I offer a discount for completing a survey?

An incentive can change who responds and adds a cost. If you use one, disclose its conditions, apply it regardless of whether feedback is positive, and report that respondents were incentivized. Do not assume a higher response count removes bias.

What is a good post-purchase survey response rate?

There is no single target that fits every placement, audience and invitation method. Define the denominator and compare like-for-like surveys. Check the usefulness and representativeness of responses as well as the rate.

Does a survey prove which marketing channel caused a purchase?

No. A buyer can report what they remember, but recall is incomplete and does not prove causation. Compare survey feedback with other evidence and keep attribution claims qualified.

Does Memberply collect post-purchase survey responses?

This guide does not describe a built-in Memberply survey collector. Memberply provides memberships and benefits. Use an appropriate survey implementation and verify any proposed integration or reward workflow separately.
